A hand serves a cheesy Overnight Breakfast Christmas Casserole with browned edges from a red baking dish. The casserole appears to contain sausage, eggs, and melted cheese.

Overnight Breakfast Christmas Casserole

Make ahead breakfast casserole is the best thing to make the night before Christmas and all through the house when not even a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. It's my tradition to make this breakfast casserole the night before Christmas while my kids are opening presents! Just pop it in the oven before you sit down under the tree and by the time you're done opening Christmas presents it will be piping hot and ready. Of course, you can make this for any morning whether it's a special event or not because this is the best meal prep as well or breakfast if you're having guests over. The best part about this is that it's going to take you all of fifteen minutes to prep and I promise you the taste is absolutely incredible! I used the Jimmy Dean hot breakfast sausage, but you can use the regular if you want instead. However, the hot breakfast sausage didn't add any heat in my opinion, only flavor. Finally, the King's Hawaiian rolls are the perfect bread for this recipe, but you can use any type of bread you like for this recipe. However, the Hawaiian rolls add the perfect touch of sweet to go along with the savory. Let's make it!

Ingredients

  • 16 oz hot or regular Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage
  • 5 tbsp of butter divided
  • 1 tbsp rubbed sage
  • 1 package of Kings Hawaiian rolls (12 rolls)
  • 7.5 oz bag Sargento 4 state shredded cheddar cheese blend
  • 7 eggs
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cracked black pepper

Method

  1. In a pan add breakfast sausage and 2 tbsp butter. Break up the sausage using a meat masher and shake over the rubbed sage. Saute the saute on medium - medium high heat until browned.
  2. Slice open the Kings Hawaiian Rolls. Butter the rolls on both sides with 3 tbsp of butter and cut them into cubes. Place the cubed buttered bread evenly in a greased 9x13 baking dish.
  3. Once the sausage is browned, add the sausage evenly over the bread in the baking dish. Then, sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the sausage.
  4. In a large measuring cup add eggs, milk, salt, and cracked black pepper. Whisk that together until combined. Pour the egg mixture evenly over into the baking dish to coat the bread, sausage, and cheese.
  5. Cover with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight.
  6. Bake uncovered at 350° F for 1 hour. Rest at least 20 minutes. Slice and Serve! Happy Holidays!
