Creamy French Fried Onion Chicken Bake

Add as a preferred source on Google

This Creamy French Fried Onion Chicken Bake is one of those dinners that feels like home — warm, creamy, crunchy, and totally comforting. It’s inspired by my viral Cheez-It Chicken, but with that buttery French onion twist that everyone at my table loves.

My kids have always been obsessed with those crispy French-fried onions — so I started making recipes that sneak them into dinner! You’ll see them pop up in favorites like Chicken Tetrazzini and Crockpot French Onion Chicken. This bake combines everything we love about both — juicy chicken, creamy layers, and that golden onion crunch on top.

🤔 Common Questions

Can I use a different cheese instead of provolone?

Absolutely! Swiss, mozzarella, or even Gruyère all melt beautifully and complement the French onion flavor. Provolone just gives it that smooth, creamy melt with a mild tang.

What can I use instead of sour cream?

You can substitute Greek yogurt or a mix of cream cheese and a splash of milk. Just make sure it’s creamy enough to spread and gives that same tangy richness.

  • 2 large chicken breasts butterflied (makes 4 thinner pieces)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 6 oz sour cream about ¾ cup
  • 8 thin slices provolone cheese
  • 2 cups French-fried onions like French’s brand

  2. Season both sides of your butterflied chicken breasts with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  3. Arrange chicken in the prepared baking dish.
  4. Spread a layer of sour cream evenly over the top of each piece.
  5. (Optional but recommended) Add a tiny shake of Worcestershire sauce over each sour cream layer for extra French onion flavor.
  6. Top each piece with a slice or two of provolone cheese (about 8 total for full coverage).
  7. In a small bowl, crush the French-fried onions slightly, then toss them with 4 tbsp melted butter and 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce until coated.
  8. Sprinkle the onion mixture evenly over the chicken.
  9. Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, or until the chicken is fully cooked (165°F internal temp) and the topping is golden and crisp.
  10. Rest for 5 minutes before serving to let the creamy sauce settle.

  1. 5 stars
I prepared this dish last night, and it was a huge hit, especially my 14-year-old picky eater who is usually very selective and hesitant to try new foods. Thank you so much, Melissa for sharing your recipes. Appreciate you

  2. I make something similar! I just coat the chicken in Hidden Valley Ranch dressing then put crushed up French fried onions all over to coat and bake it! Delicious!
