French Onion Crockpot Roast

If you’re looking for the ultimate comfort food dinner, this French Onion Butter Roast is it. We’re talking tender chuck roast slow-cooked all day in layers of buttery onion flavor, rich consommé, and a kick of Dan-O’s seasoning that takes it over the top. I also made another delicious recipe called Creamy Steakhouse Beef & Noodles! This was an absolute masterpiece of a recipe just like the one you’re currently on!

This one’s a true “set it and forget it” crockpot meal—you toss everything in, let it simmer low and slow, and by the time dinner rolls around, you’ve got the most juicy, melt-in-your-mouth roast with a sauce that practically begs to be poured over mashed potatoes. And if you really want to go all out? Throw a slice of melty Muenster or Swiss cheese on top for that cozy French onion soup vibe in roast form. The cheesoning in this recipe is just unbelievable, I can’t even recommend a substitute that would give this dish it’s delicious flavor.

🤔 Common Questions

Can I cook this on HIGH instead of LOW?

Yes—you can cook on HIGH for about 4–5 hours if you’re short on time. But low and slow really gives you the most tender, fall-apart roast.

Can I make this without the canned soups?

Yep! You can swap them with 2 cups of beef broth and 1–2 extra onions for a more “from scratch” version. The flavor will be a little lighter but still delicious.

Pro Tip

For the ultimate French Onion Roast sandwich, bake your Texas toast only halfway before topping it with the beef and cheese. Finishing it in the oven this way makes the bread crisp, the roast juicy, and the muenster perfectly melty.
