Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Thanksgiving dinner in one pan! Chicken, stuffing, and green bean casserole all bake together in one dish. Easy grocery store shortcuts. Stove Top stuffing, canned green beans, cream of chicken soup, and prepared gravy make this incredibly simple.
Juicy, flavorful chicken. The sour cream keeps the chicken moist while the stuffing bakes into a buttery topping. Perfect for busy weeknights. About 15 minutes of prep and into the oven it goes! Holiday-worthy. I’m not kidding when I say this could be your actual Thanksgiving dinner for a smaller gathering.

For my green bean casserole I like to use the Del Monte Cut Green Beans!

Add the green beans and cream of mushroom soup into a bowl.

My trick is the pour the milk into the soup can to get all the excess out before adding it into the bowl.

Mix in seasonings and fried onions. Now pour that mixture into a 9×13 baking dish.

Top the green bean casserole with the butterflied chicken breasts.

I always use the French’s Fried Onion Straws!

Evenly spread the sour cream over the chicken and sprinkle the fried onions over top.

Now it’s time to assemble the best part: the stuffing mixture! (I used the Stove Top Savory Herbs Stuffing Mix).

Combine the stuffing mix with warm chicken stock.

Spoon the stuffing mixture over the chicken and grate butter over top.

Time for the oven!

I personally love serving this dish with Bob Evans Mashed Potatoes and Heinz Homestyle Turkey Gravy!

Melissaโs Tips!
- Warm your chicken stock first! I like to heat mine in a liquid measuring cup in the microwave before mixing it with the Stove Top stuffing. It helps the stuffing absorb the liquid and soften nicely.
- Save some crispy onions! Use about 3/4 of the container in your green bean casserole, but save the remaining 1/4 to sprinkle over your sour cream-covered chicken.
- Butterfly your chicken breasts. Two large, thick chicken breasts cut into four thinner portions will cook more evenly and give you four perfect servings.
- Pile that stuffing high! You don’t need to spread the stuffing over the green beans. Put generous mounds directly over each piece of chicken.
- Use COLD butter! Take it straight from the refrigerator and grate it with a zester over the stuffing. This helps distribute the butter evenly.
- Bake uncovered. You want the stuffing to develop a beautiful golden top while everything underneath gets hot and bubbly.
- Don’t skip the gravy! The warm turkey gravy poured over the stuffing is what really makes this taste like Thanksgiving dinner.
- Check your chicken! Always make sure the thickest part reaches 165ยฐF before serving.
๐ค Common Questions
Yes! You can prepare the green bean casserole mixture and butterfly and season your chicken ahead of time. Keep them refrigerated separately until you’re ready to assemble. For the best stuffing texture, I recommend preparing the stuffing and adding it to the casserole right before baking. If assembling with cold ingredients, the casserole may need additional baking time.
Absolutely! Boneless, skinless chicken thighs would work, although the cooking time may vary depending on their size and thickness. Make sure the chicken reaches an internal temperature of at least 165ยฐF before serving.
No, you can use another boxed stuffing mix if you prefer. Just keep in mind that different brands may require different amounts of liquid, so adjust according to the package directions. I used a 6-ounce box of Stove Top with 1 1/2 cups of warm chicken stock, and it worked beautifully.

Refrigerator: Allow the casserole to cool, then transfer leftovers to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3โ4 days.
Freezer: You can freeze cooked portions in freezer-safe containers for up to 2โ3 months for best quality. Keep in mind that the green bean casserole and stuffing may soften after thawing.
Reheating: Place leftovers in an oven-safe dish, cover with foil, and reheat at 325ยฐF until heated through to 165ยฐF. You can also microwave individual portions. A little extra warm gravy helps keep everything moist and delicious!
