Melissaโ€™s Tips!

  • Do NOT add chicken stock! I know youโ€™re going to look at the crockpot and think there isnโ€™t enough liquid. But Iโ€™m telling you, donโ€™t do it! As everything cooks, the vegetables release moisture, the butter melts, and the sausage adds even more flavor. Youโ€™re going to end up with the most delicious juices without adding a single drop of broth.
  • Donโ€™t skip the tomato paste. This is my little twist on the TikTok viral recipe, and I really think itโ€™s what takes this dish to the next level. It gives the juices richness and makes all those flavors come together beautifully.
  • Slice your smoked sausage diagonally. Not only does it look pretty, but you get those nice pieces of sausage throughout the entire dish.
  • Watch the salt. Tonyโ€™s Creole seasoning, onion soup mix, salted butter, and smoked sausage all contain salt, so thereโ€™s no need to add extra salt before cooking. Taste it at the end.
  • Serve it with Texas toast. Iโ€™m telling you, this is the way to go. You want something to soak up all that delicious buttery sauce!

๐Ÿค” Common Questions

Do I need to add chicken broth or water to swamp potatoes?

No! The potatoes, green beans, onions, sausage, and butter create plenty of flavorful juices as they cook. Adding broth can water down those rich, savory flavors.

Can I make swamp potatoes ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can chop your vegetables and slice the sausage ahead of time. Store everything in the refrigerator until youโ€™re ready to assemble the crockpot. Keep the cut potatoes submerged in cold water in the refrigerator and drain them before cooking.

What kind of sausage should I use for swamp potatoes?

I use smoked sausage because it adds such a delicious smoky flavor to the potatoes and vegetables. You can also use smoked kielbasa or another fully cooked smoked sausage that you enjoy.
