Little Dip Bread Bowls

If youโ€™ve been following me on TikTok for a while, then you already know they call me theย Slider Queen! Some of my most viral recipes have been myย Bacon Cheeseburger Animal Sliders,ย Chopped Cheese Sliders, andย Roast Beef Dip Sliders. I have made just about every kind of slider you can imagine, but these Little Dip Bread Bowls might be one of the best things I have ever put inside a Kingโ€™s Hawaiian roll.

And then, of course, there is probably one recipe I am even MORE famous for: myย Hot Onion Dip. Itโ€™s not technically a slider, but it is very similar to what weโ€™re doing here. My original Hot Onion Dip is creamy, cheesy, oniony goodness that I love serving warm withย Kingโ€™s Hawaiian Pretzel Bitesย for dipping.

So naturally I thoughtโ€ฆ why are we dipping the bread into the dip when we could put the dip RIGHT INSIDE THE BREAD?! And that is exactly how theseย Little Dip Bread Bowlsย were born.

These are almost like French onion soup meets my famous Hot Onion Dip meets a Kingโ€™s Hawaiian sliderโ€”except every single roll becomes its own little bread bowl. And let me tell you, they are freaking DELICIOUS.

I caramelize sweet Vidalia onions slow and low, mix them right in the skillet with mayonnaise and freshly shredded Swiss cheese, and then stuff that hot onion dip into little bread bowls made from Kingโ€™s Hawaiian rolls. Then I brush the whole thing with garlic butter, add more Swiss cheese on top, bake them until warm and melty, and give them a quick broil until theyโ€™re browned and bubbly.

I am telling you right now: make these for a party and WATCH what happens. Everyone is going to stand around the tray pulling them apart until every last one is gone.

And the best part? They are SO doggone easy!

Why Youโ€™ll Love These Little Dip Bread Bowls

You get everything in one bite: sweet caramelized onions, creamy hot onion dip, melted Swiss cheese, soft and slightly sweet Kingโ€™s Hawaiian bread, and garlicky buttery goodness all over the outside.

You can make one tray of 12 and serve the extra onion dip on the side, or grab two packages of Kingโ€™s Hawaiian rolls and turn the whole batch of dip into 24 Little Dip Bread Bowls.

And hereโ€™s another little bonus: when you cut the centers out of the rolls, SAVE THEM! Those little bread squares are perfect for dipping into any extra hot onion dip. Nothing goes to waste around here!

Keep your Kingโ€™s Hawaiian rolls togetherย right inside the tray they come in. Yes, you can bake them right in that tray, and I highly recommend doing it this way because it keeps all of the rolls together and helps them hold their shape.

Chopped onions being sautรฉed in a black frying pan, stirred with a wooden spoon, starting to brown with visible steam rising.

Let the onions cook over medium-low to low heat, stirring them and moving them around every so often. Donโ€™t rush them! You want them to soften and become beautifully golden brown. The trick is simplyย slow and low, salt and pepper. Thatโ€™s it!

Once the onions are exactly how you like them, turn off the heat. Add the mayo and cheese. Now just stir! You donโ€™t need to turn the burner back on. The residual heat from the skillet and those hot caramelized onions is going to start melting the Swiss cheese into the mayonnaise.

Melissaโ€™s Tips!

  • Slow and low on those onions!ย Donโ€™t try to rush caramelized onions with high heat.
  • Vidalia onions are perfect here because theyโ€™re naturally sweet.
  • I like my onions golden brown, not super dark. If you prefer them more deeply caramelized, keep cooking them.
  • Shred your own Swiss cheese.ย It melts so much better into the dip.
  • Donโ€™t cut through the bottom of the rolls when youโ€™re making the bread bowls or your dip can leak out.
  • Keep the rolls in their original tray while baking.ย It keeps everything together and makes this recipe ridiculously easy.
  • Take your garlic butter spread out early so itโ€™s soft and easy to brush over the rolls.
  • Save those little bread squares you remove from the centers! Theyโ€™re perfect for dipping into any leftover hot onion dip.
  • If youโ€™re broiling at the end, stay right by the oven. You only need about a minute.

One Tray or Two?

This recipe gives you options.

If youโ€™re serving a smaller group, use one 12-count package of Kingโ€™s Hawaiian rolls. Stuff the 12 Little Dip Bread Bowls and serve your remaining hot onion dip on the side with those little bread squares for dipping.

For a bigger party, useย two 12-count packagesย and divide the filling between all 24 rolls. Honestly, I donโ€™t think youโ€™ll regret making 24.

๐Ÿค” Common Questions

Can I make Little Dip Bread Bowls ahead of time?

You can caramelize the onions and prepare the dip ahead of time and keep it refrigerated. When youโ€™re ready to serve, make your bread bowls, fill them, add the garlic butter and Swiss cheese, and bake them until everything is completely hot and melty.

Do I have to use Swiss cheese?

Swiss gives these that delicious French-onion-soup flavor that works SO well with the caramelized Vidalia onions, so itโ€™s definitely my favorite for this recipe. If you really donโ€™t like Swiss, you could substitute another good melting cheese, but the flavor will be different.

How do I know when my onions are done?

Theyโ€™re done when YOU like them! I cook mine slowly until theyโ€™re soft and golden brown. You can keep going if you prefer deeply caramelized onions. Just keep your heat low and give them time.

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 8 oz block Swiss cheese, freshly shredded and divided
  • 1-2 packages Kingโ€™s Hawaiian Original Hawaiian Sweet Rolls 12 count

  5. Add mayonnaise and the remaining shredded Swiss cheese to the skillet. Stir with the caramelized onions for a couple of minutes until creamy and incorporated using the residual heat.

  8. Generously spoon the hot onion dip into each bread bowl.
  9. Brush softened garlic butter over the tops and around the sides of the rolls.
  10. Sprinkle the reserved Swiss cheese over the filled centers.

๐Ÿ‘ How to Store Leftovers

These are definitely best served hot and fresh from the oven when the bread is buttery and the centers are warm and gooey.

If you have leftovers, place them in an airtight container and refrigerate them. Reheat them in the oven or air fryer until warmed through so the bread can crisp back up a little. I would skip the microwave if possible because the rolls will be much softer.
